PVC (polyvinyl chloride), or more commonly vinyl, is one of the most hazardous materials found in consumer products. PVC is dangerous to human health and the environment in the manufacturing process, during the usage of products with PVC and its disposal. PVC contains some of the most toxic materials such as mercury, dioxins, and phthalates and releases these toxins even during everyday use in our homes. PVC releases dioxins both during the manufacturing process and when disposed of; dioxins are some of the most potent toxins tied to cancer and harm to the human immune and reproductive systems.
