The internation group the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development has established guidelines to determine whether a product is readily or ultimately biodegradable. These guidelines are used by ecolabeling programs such as Nordic Swan in certifying products for environmental friendliness. Products that are readily biodegradable are the most preferable, having the shortest impact on the environment.
