The EU Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive 2002/95/EC specifies the trace amount (by weight) of lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and/or cadmium the electonic products may contain. This directive seeks to reduce these materials in electronic waste in landfills and incinerators, where they can leach into the environment and cause problems to human health. This directive is related to the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment Directive (2002/96/EC), which seeks to minimize the impact of electronic waste on the environment through re-use and recycling.
