Why care about Harmful/Toxic Ingredients?

I use EO products all the time and love how fantastic they smell. Out of curiosity, I checked the ingredients and saw EDTA listed. Also it contains Phenoxyethanol. Anyone know if this is an APE or APD? Wikipedia was a little vague about this ingredient.
